Peanut Butter Binge

Last night I couldn't resist and ate at least 3 servings of peanut butter (6 tablespoons). That's 600+ calories and has tons of carbs. I know PB is allowed (in small quantities) on SCD...but I went way too far and finished the jar. How much damage do you think I did?

Tim was right when he says peanut butter is like crack for some women.. lol :-)

You'll be fine though- just save it for cheat days next time! Maybe get it out of the house if you can- dominoes aren't worth it unless you can control your intake with no problems.

Don't worry about it- I can think of worse foods to 'binge' on ;)

    amen to that sam :)

  • 4hbwoman commented Jan 18th 2012:

Thanks Sam - you made me feel much better. I just felt out of control and like I cheated bad - which I hate to do. I guess PB wasn't the worst thing.... I'm keeping it out of the house from now on.

  • Sam Green commented Jan 18th 2012:

I know the feeling. At least you know what it's like an and are in better control of those feelings. You definitely didn't screw anything up- just ate more for the day, which we all do in a strategic way on this plan anyway- if you're still worried you could always hold off cheat day another day just to make sure you don't halt your progress. You don't have to though- it's up to you.

We all have different learning points - its all part of the plan to learn how to control our eating habits for life :)

It's like crack for some men too! :) At least the sugared kind is... I can't get to like all-natural stuff so I guess I'm good to go.

Now, ya see, I see posts like this and it just reinforces my stand on NO NUT BUTTERS or NUTS in my eating plan. :) I have recently incorporated 1 (not heaping) teaspoon of roasted, salted sunflower seeds from Trader Joes on top of my side salad. It REALLY improves it as it gives it a bit of a crunch and nuttiness that my boring meals were lacking. :) I looked at the nutrition listing for the sunflower seeds and OMG.....for 1/4 cup of sunflower seeds it's like 200 calories O_o YOWZA! This is why 1 tsp of sunflower seeds is A-OK! :)

Get it out of the house, 4hbwoman. It seems Nuts/Nut Butters are on your "No-No" list. ;) Good Luck!

  • Dana W commented Jan 18th 2012:

I found little hundred calorie nut packs. I've brought them to work in case of an emergency only 4 g s of carbs per bag so not too terrible.

  • chubbycheeks commented Jan 18th 2012:

Love the PB :) its so easy to over indulge. Don't beat yourself up about it just try to move on. Carbs aren't too bad in a few servingsso probably no harm done...it could have been worse right?

  • 4hbwoman commented Jan 18th 2012:

Thanks guys - it will have to move to 'no-no' status except for on a cheat day

At least you didn't have it with bread =P

  • Maria Rider commented Jan 18th 2012:

LOL, Arctic! :) I handled a lot of peanut butter today and finished the jar...in the my banana bread experiment today. I made a sweet bread loaf rendition of Elvis' favorite sandwich. :) So, I dubbed it Elvis' Peanut Butter Bacon Banana Bread! :9 Oh, how I wanted to lick my fingers or nibble on a piece, nope. Didn't....saving my sampling of it on Saturday. :) I had my daughter sample it, she said it was good. BUT I need to tweak it a bit more. I am thinking of candying the bacon in the oven with honey(another of the components of Elvis's sandwich). :) Chopping it up and putting it in the batter. Oh my! :9

  • Maria Rider commented Jan 18th 2012:

I love baking! I have no problem baking and not licking my fingers or nibbling when I do. :) I am THAT disciplined!: ) But, watch out cause I will smell my tasty treats quite a bit! :9

  • Maria Rider commented Jan 18th 2012:

*FLEX* Yes, I do. :) I've pretty much committed myself both mentally and physically to this new way of eating....licking/snacking at stuff I shouldn't just slows down/halts my progress. I am already fighting the ovulation and the period monster for at least 2 weeks out of the month...I don't need to slow it down further with cheats midweek..."It's just NOT worth it!" :)

  • Sam Green commented Jan 18th 2012:

@Akane, I tried an Elviswich on my last cheat day- I love them! They are very rich and satisfying, and actually 'healthish' if you look past the fact they are fried in butter, have white bread and contain a lot of sugar, lol.

  • DaChan commented Jan 18th 2012:

Akane I love baking too! I've been going to pastry school for almost a year, and being in the kitchen really solidifies the no licking-no tasting bit of baking. My cheat days are on Sunday, so I save my personal baking for then. Honestly being around the sweet stuff constantly can be difficult around the TOTM, but otherwise the over exposure keeps me from wanting it.

As for the desserts I bring home, I have some very eager co-workers who are kind enough to take them off my hands.

  • arctichacker commented Jan 18th 2012:

I used to love fried egg & bacon & PB sandwiches. I think I'm going to try a grain-free version with coconut flour pancakes which theroetically would be SCD friendly...hmmm...might have to try it as a post-workout meal one day.

Long term.....Not much.

Just dont let it become a habit.

If you feel that you cant just have that small tea spoon of PB before bed......throw it out and dont have it in the house.

(or keep it for cheat days only on a separate "cheat day shelf" that you know you cant touch)

Keep it up!

  • 4hbwoman commented Jan 17th 2012:

Yeah- I may have to just view it as a cheat day item and not tempt myself with even a little. Thanks

  • Cathieely Enter last name commented Jan 18th 2012:

im the same with splenda 4hwomen so i just dont buy it or i take it over to moms house and just use it on cheat days now. i dont have it any where in the house regular sugar either. try almond butter i get it at trader joes it has crunchy flax seed in it. i have a table spoon every night before bed. or in the morning but not both hope this helps:) but if you find it hard to not eat alot maybe wait until you have been on scd a while before you have it in the house> or else just use it on cheat day:) good luck you can do it :)

  • 4hbwoman commented Jan 18th 2012:

Thanks Cathieely - Almond butter is dangerous for me as well... I think I just have to avoid it - it's a domino food for me

Take it from me... Get.Rid.Of.It.

I have zero self-control when it comes to the stuff too and I have even tested my control periodically... I will buy a jar of it or of almond butter and think to myself 'Oh, I should be fine. Not sure why I was so worried. I must have been exaggerating or something.' Ummm no, that is my crazy-ass almond butter addict speaking and that 'voice' can not be trusted. Every time I will polish off a 1/3 or a 1/2 of a jar in one day and it FEELS like I am practicing restraint not eating the whole jar lol.

Don't beat yourself up about it, just move on and chalk it up as a very fatty and calorically (is that even a word?) dense lesson ;)

  • Dana W commented Jan 18th 2012:

I've done it with nutella. I had to get rid of it. Too delicious.

  • 4hbwoman commented Jan 18th 2012:

@TeaLove - you made me smile - LOL. I too feel like I'm restraining myself at 1/2 a jar. I also feel the same way when I buy it - like 'oh this time I'll just limit it and be fine'. You're right that it's an addict talking...I inevitably always binge on it. Hopefully this one slip won't affect the diet too much. My cheat day was on Sunday and the PB binge Monday night. I have a few days b/f the next weigh in so maybe I'll at least stay the same.

  • TeaLove commented Jan 18th 2012:

@ECat: No noooo nutellllaaaa! That stuff also has demonic properties lol I found out while we were away this year that I am allergic to an additive in Nutella and Cadbury's so it is almost a blessing.

Lol it is so funny how convincing that voice is, isn't it? Nah babe, don't stress! The worst thing that could happen is your results slow down a little this week and that isn't such a big deal :) Keep kicking some ass!

I've lost 30+ pounds on this diet and I eat Peanut Butter daily. I've learned a few tricks that work for me. When I started SCD I eat the beans, meat, etc. but also ate peanut butter and I still lost weight. The last couple of months I cut the beans and started eating tons of veggies and meat and good old peanut butter. Still losing weight. I have even become fond of roasting my own raw peanuts, thats how much I love them. I let them replace my beans now even though technically they are a legume. Life's just too damn short to not eat Peanuts!

  • Maria Rider commented Jan 18th 2012:

How long did it take you to lose that 30+ pounds, Wing? :) That's the question. Some people, like yourself, can control yourself on the nut butter/nut consumption per day. Some have had success doing the 1 tbl of peanut butter a day or whatever. It's all an experiment. What may work for you may not work for another. I tend to be kinda hyper-paranoid about stuff like this cause more often than not I see people lamenting on how their overconsumption of nuts and nut butters has stalled their progress or made them gain weight. Thus, why I stay away from it cause it is too much of a "snack food" for me and I'm a "habitual snacker" by nature. It's how I got to 247 lbs. So, if you can handle the nut butters, GREAT! If not, get rid of it! :) Good Luck!

  • wingtcoach commented Jan 19th 2012:

It took me less than a year. What is great about the SCD as opposed to say Body Opus or Weight Watchers is that its very easy to manipulate. I would have a hard time if I went strictly by the book with the organic this and that and the grain fed etc.. but it's truly not necessary IMO. Kind of a dirty SCD is what I call it. Learning to include these little indulgences has made this diet the easiest ever to stay on long term.

I eat PB every day! If you can, get an organic PB with no added sugar. The one that I eat only has 2 ingredients, peanuts & salt.

With that being said, I think you are ok since technically, peanuts are legumes!

  • Maria Rider commented Jan 18th 2012:

It is also calorically dense and has a lot of fat. Eat too much of it...even if it is legumes....it'll make you gain/stall. If you can control yourself, fine, but if you can't....get rid of it until Cheat Day.

  • 4hbwoman commented Jan 18th 2012:

Thanks PeterJ24 - I think I eat way too much for it to be ok. I fear if I get the Organic version I would just justify my binge even more - LOL

Ha ha! I love this question. How in the hell did you manage to stomach 6 tablespoons?!

Delete it from your shopping list. :D

  • 4hbwoman commented Jan 17th 2012:

I've eaten more than that in one sitting - LOL. This was the remainder from my cheat day where I ate about 1/2 the jar! I'm upset b/c two days in a row I ate so much pb and I know it isn't good for you. I could eat jar after jar - I love it. You're right though - I can't buy it anymore, too risky for me!

  • lisa_a commented Jan 18th 2012:

I got into a really bad habit of waking up during the night and eating it straight from the jar- sometimes not realising what I was doing until after a few tablespoons! Got rid of it and it works

  • 4hbwoman commented Jan 18th 2012:

    Thanks Lisa_a

  • Josie Zhou commented Aug 1st 2012:

I eat 2 tablespoons of all natural no added sugars or oils peanut butter everyday...and have lost 3.4 pound in the last 5 days, and that includes my cheat day.

ALWAYS use a measuring spoon with peanut butter, and you'll be fine.
